STUDY IN CANADA

EDUCATION SYSTEM

In Canada, education is both publicly and privately supported, allowing parents to send their children to the school of their choosing. It is governed by provincial governments, similar to how each state has a state board with some federal input. The academic year in Canada normally runs from September to June each year. The country is rightfully proud of its institutions and universities. Students from all over the world come to Canada for tertiary education, and Canadian degrees are internationally recognised.

THE LANDSCAPE OF EDUCATION

Universities, University Colleges, Community Colleges, and Career Colleges are the four categories in which the institutions are classified. The Indian student community is well-versed in universities and community colleges. Typically, universities provide: Master of Engineering degrees need coursework and a project, with coursework being the most important component. Master of Applied Science (MASc) degrees require coursework as well as a thesis, with the thesis being the most important component. Students can seek for scholarships for these degrees, which typically take two years to complete. Community colleges often provide the following services: Diplomas from post-secondary institutions — A two-year commitment Advanced Diplomas are three-year programmes. Graduate Certificates/Post Graduate Diplomas (one or two years) Every year, Canada invites around 250,000 – 300,000 international students to study in Canada and upon graduation students are eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to 3 years. They can apply for Permanent Residency while on PGWP if certain conditions are met.

PROCEDURES: ADMISSION TO VISA

February (tier 1), July (tier 2), and October/November are the admissions months for Australian universities (tier3). Bachelor’s degrees normally take three years of full-time study and require a Class 12 (or) + 2 qualification as well as an IELTS score of six bands with no band less than 5.5. Masters degrees usually take 1 to 2 years of full-time study and require an IELTS score of 6.5 bands, with no band lower than 6 and in certain circumstances even lower. PTE and TOEFL are also recognised by Australian universities. Part-time job: During the sessions, students are allowed to work 40 hours a week, and full-time during academic breaks and vacations. The national minimum wage in Australia is $17.29 per hour as of July 1, 2015. Successful graduates can apply for a Post Study Work Visa, which permits them to stay and hunt for a full-time employment while remaining eligible to apply for Permanent Migration via the General Skilled Independent Migration programme. This visa, however, requires an aggregate IELTS score of 6 bands. SDS & NON SDS (STUDENT DIRECT STREAM)

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a scheme that expedites the processing of study permits for persons who wish to study in Canada at a specified post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI). Conditions to be eligible to apply for a study permit under the SDS route are:
1) IELTS (academic) of overall 6 with no band less than 6
2) Upfront one tuition fee payment to the DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
3) One year living expenses to be transferred and GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) to be obtained
4) Visa outcome in 15-to-20-day time and the visa approval rate is very high

Non-SDS

If you do not match any of the above three criteria, you must apply for a visa using the non-SDS route, which takes longer than the SDS and has a lower visa approval rate.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER FINISHING MY STUDIES IN CANADA?

CANADA'S ONE-OF-A-KIND FACTS

For the seventh year in a row, the United Nations named it as the finest place to live in the world. After Russia, it is the world’s second-largest country. Historically, it has been a country of immigrants, and it actively promotes multicultural variety ( First country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as a policy in 1971). The population density is quite low (3.3 people per square kilometre). According to the Canadian High Commission, a student should have $10,000 CND per year to cover his living expenses, food, communication, and transportation. 9,600 CND per year in Quebec. With a photo identity card in their travel cards, students over the age of 19 obtain savings. The visa price for a study permit application is $150, which is roughly Rs 8000 to Rs 9000 in India, and must be paid in cash at the VFS Canada office. The student would be charged Rs 3000 for medicals, which must be paid at the hospital. Students can begin working off-campus as soon as their classes begin at the College/University. The Social Insurance Number, or SIN, permits students to be paid electronically by their employers, preventing wage exploitation. Effective October 1, 2015, the minimum wage in Ontario is $11.25 cents per hour. Information Technology, Business, Health Science such as Pharmacy and Nursing, and Engineering are some of the most popular programmes among students. Another well-known programme among students is the MBA.
